Bench and Ottoman
In a series entitled TP-160, Richter has transformed stacks of toilet paper rolls into a modernist chair and ottoman. “I appropriate a commodity and reconfigure it as an object with a fundamental use,” states Richter. The innovation is in the reconfiguration of pre-existing, seemingly banal materials. The critique of consumerism and design lies in the historical implication and the materials themselves. Reversing the hierarchy, toilet paper becomes furniture.
